In November 2025, a fire engulfed residential complex Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po District, becoming one of Hong Kong’s deadliest modern tragedies. Fuelled by flammable netting on bamboo scaffolding, the high-rise became an inescapable trap. The disaster claimed 168 lives including children and the elderly, injured dozens, and later prompted a tight government restriction on public commemorations and petitions. The devastating catastrophe has left a profound collective trauma behind in the densely-populated city, which is now living under tightening grip.
