This photograph depicts Grauballe Man, one of Denmark's remarkable Iron Age bog bodies, preserved for more than 2,300 years in the tannin-rich waters of a peat bog after being sacrificed around 300 BC. It was made at Moesgaard Museum, Aarhus, in December 2025. My intention was not simply to document an archaeological artefact, but to explore the unsettling encounter between past and present. The silent visitors become witnesses to an ancient act of violence, while the preserved body seems almost to rise towards them. The faint reflection of the photographer, deliberately retained in the glass, acknowledges that I too became part of that encounter. Grauballe Man has haunted me ever since.
