Arcus Photinus (Luminous Arc) begins with a fragment of deadwood photographed against the sky. Through rotation and tonal inversion, the familiar orientation of trunk, branch and atmosphere is unsettled. What once extended upwards now appears to descend from an undefined ground, becoming at once a root system, a lightning strike and an anatomical structure suspended in space. The pale wood retains its physical grain, fractures and residual fibres. These details preserve the material origin of the subject even as its scale and direction become uncertain. Against the dark olive field, the branching forms appear illuminated from within, while the inverted clouds suggest depth without providing a stable horizon. The title combines the Latin arcus, meaning arc, with photinus, referring to luminosity. It identifies the curved branch as both a natural form and an event of light. The photograph does not conceal its botanical source, but allows that source to acquire other possible identities. Rotation is used not as a decorative device, but to interrupt the habitual relationship between earth and sky. The branch no longer belongs securely to either realm. It appears to grow downwards into an atmospheric ground, as though root, bolt and nervous system had briefly become interchangeable.
