"Surface Matters: Portraits in Photogravure" investigates portraiture through the unique material language of photogravure. Rather than functioning simply as a means of reproduction, the medium becomes an integral part of the portrait itself. Its etched plate, hand-worked printing and richly inked surface create images whose physical presence is inseparable from their emotional and psychological resonance. The project explores identity, memory and the passage of time through closely observed studies of the human face and body. These portraits move beyond likeness to consider how experience becomes visible. Skin is treated not merely as a surface but as a repository of lived experience, where age, emotion and resilience are quietly inscribed. Every line, crease and tonal transition contributes to the sitter's presence, revealing a life accumulated rather than a moment simply recorded. Photogravure's extraordinary tonal subtlety and tactile depth make it uniquely suited to this enquiry. The process requires patience, precision and repeated acts of handcraft, slowing both the making of the image and its reception. The resulting prints ask to be encountered as physical objects whose material qualities deepen the act of looking. In an age of instantaneous digital images, Surface Matters proposes a different understanding of photographic portraiture. The portrait is not complete when the photograph is taken; it is realised in the making of the print. Through the material presence of photogravure, the physical surface of the print becomes an extension of the sitter's own presence, inviting a slower, more reflective encounter with memory, vulnerability and the enduring traces of human experience.
