Ancient kahikatea trees dominate the foreground of Lake Wahapo, where the light of the rising sun filters through the canopy, sending beams of light between the branches. Kahikatea are New Zealand’s tallest native trees, growing in wetland forests and floodplains. Their towering trunks and ancient presence make them a defining feature of the country’s unique natural landscape.
