In the incense villages outside Hanoi, Vietnam, artisans craft incense sticks by first soaking bamboo cores in a vibrant mixture of dye, acid, and protective chemicals. After drying in the sun, these dyed sticks are fed into a machine that applies a coating of fragrant binder with cinnamon powder to the colorless portion, preparing them for use in temples and homes.
