Commanding. Intense. Unapologetically present. “Dominion” captures the raw essence of an Angus bull in a powerful frontal portrait — straw still clinging to his face, muscles defined, eyes unflinching. Shot in natural light against a deep black background, every detail invites the viewer into a quiet moment of confrontation and respect. This photograph was taken on our family farm in New Zealand during late autumn, just before the winter muster. The subject — one of our dominant Angus bulls — had just emerged from the straw-laden yard, a moment that revealed both his physical strength and quiet authority. The image was captured exactly as it was experienced: real, raw, and rooted in place. The title, Dominion, reflects not only the commanding presence of the animal itself, but also the broader connection between land, beast, and the unspoken power dynamic between humans and the wilderness they work within. This bull is not just livestock — he is legacy, strength, and an unyielding part of the high country rhythm. This work is part of an ongoing series documenting life on the land through a fine art lens. It aims to honour the often-overlooked moments of dignity and character found in working animals and rural life. By presenting the subject in such a stark and dramatic composition, I wanted to elevate the animal to something almost mythic — a living sculpture of muscle, mud, and meaning. “Dominion” is a celebration of strength, stillness, and story — a portrait that speaks without needing words.
