A male and female mallard photographed in Belgium. Mallards are thought to be the most abundant and wide-ranging duck on Earth. They prefer calm and shallow sanctuaries and can be found in Asia, Europe, and North America. The male, with its iconic green head, white collar and bright yellow bill is the most distinctively colored of the mallards. Females are brown mottled with a brownish-orange bill and have less eye-catching colors. To mate, the female prefers the most dominant male and then dutifully follows him. That is why in this photo Mrs. duck is out of focus.
