Building the Palace of Mafra (Portugal) was quite an undertaking in the 18th century. It is said that 15-45 thousand people worked on the construction. The entire palace has more than 1200 rooms. However, there is one space that stands out among the rest. The classicist library is one of the largest and most important libraries of the Enlightenment in Europe. It houses more than 36,000 books - many of which used to be on the list of works banned by the Church of the time.
